So after knocking it apart and cutting it up, I end up with a design that will fit and built it out of MDF: |
I decided to simply make the motherboard standoffs from MDF as well:
And finally gave the whole thing a coat of speckle paint. The little assembly on the left is to support the drives:
I will have three 5 1/4" devices exposed: a removable hard drive, a DVD burner and a card reader. So I knocked out the center of the cabinet and cut a square hole in it:
A quick test fit of the parts shows everything looking ok:
The stereo amplifier I'm going to use is my 20 year old Yamaha AVC-30U. This great old girl was retired when I got the big RX-Z1:
I have to mount the amplifier in the cabinet next to the computer so another shelf is required. I'm trying to keep the entire thing accessible and easily removable so had to come up with a folding design for the amp shelf:
On the computer cabinet, I added a simple rest for the folding shelf:
And once again speckle painted both parts:
