[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] | Since the motherboard was out and accessible, I decided to remove the "greenie" over the BX chipset and replace it with a little 486 fan. Surprisingly, there was no thermal goop between the chip and the heatsink.
After thouroughly vaccuuming out the case, it was time to start putting the components back in. This time however, I decided to put the hard drive in bay #2 directly under the double blower. The theory being that any heat blown off it will get immediately sucked out.
So, its time for a test run. Fire it up - amazingly everything works on first attempt. Check case temperature and it is now at 24C! Nice!
Still haven't put the bezel (faceplate) back on yet however. It is obvious from looking at it that it is not going to allow sufficient airflow for the big 120mm intake. So I measured out the existing airholes (1cm apart) and drew a grid for some new ones.
I used an automatic centerpunch to mark the new holes and drilled pilots using the Dremel and a 3/64" drillbit. Time to head to the garage and the drillpress.
Here it is in its new "finished" state.
Unfortunately, these holes don't seem to be allowing enough air in as case temps climbed back up to 26C :( On the brighter side though, even after playing Q3 all night long the temperature is still 26C :) Nonetheless, going to have to open the front up more to allow better airflow. Hafta think about that.....
